Jim Wells MLA, the chairman of the Assembly’s Health Committee was in sparking form when he tackled head- on, tough questions posed by participants at the latest of NIGAG’s off the record briefing sessions in the popular “In Camera” series.
Hosted by the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland at their University Street, Belfast premises, the lunch time gathering saw DUP man Wells outline his “script” of the role of his Committee at Stormont, highlighting the crucial role which his members play in relationships with the statutory, voluntary, community and business sectors.
He explained the scrutiny aspects of the Committee’s functions and expressed his gratitude to the staffs of the health and social services while drawing attention to the current and likely financial constraints facing the services now and in the coming year.
Among those who put challenging questions and observations to Mr. Wells were Andrew Dougall (NI Chest , Heart and Stroke Association), Stephen Mc Bride (Arthritis Care), Aodhan Connolly (Prince’s Trust), Breedagh Hughes (RCM), Sarah Mc Grath ( Irish Department of Foreign Affairs) and NIGAG vice – chairman Gerry Carson.
The were question and answers were directed by NIGAG chairman Will Chambre.
